PORTLAND, Ore. -- Police are trying to track down scammers who stole thousands from an elderly woman. It's the second time in a year Jeanette Stewart, 88, has been a victim, police said.In November, Stewart tried to chase down a robber to try to get her husband's wallet back. The woman's husband died earlier this year, and the robber was eventually caught.
This time, police said three men cheated her out of $5,000 by offering to repair her old Monte Carlo. She gave them the money but then called police when she realized it was a scam."I'm not the only elderly lady who has been scammed. And it's not right because we're widows and we're on fixed incomes," Stewart said.Portland police said the three men probably specialize in ripping off the elderly and advise people not to answer their doors for people they don't know. They also said it's not a good idea to hire someone that you haven't called to your home for any service.
